Writing Alliance, Steps for writing a Story:
- 1. Outline descriptions of your main characters’ personalities and then give them names.
- 2. Consider families and backgrounds to these characters but don’t worry about too much detail as there’s always going to be development.
- 3. Start by conjuring up random scenarios between all characters in different situations and put yourself in their shoes, imagining all their traits to see how they would respond and react with other different characters. This then enables you to see which characters form which relationships and help with general development.
- 4. With these discovered relations, you can help picture typical scenes or things you can imagine these characters doing and possibly plot a little into this, just as practise.
- 5. Start to investigate why certain characters act certain ways. Is there a background family history or past event that has had an emotional impact on them? This helps develops morals and beliefs and characters’ attitudes to things.
- 6. With this, you can then imagine what it is your main character will set out to do and can finally conjure up your main plot as well as throwing in other characters to see how this would pan out. Never stick to a single plot and not let yourself develop, it’s okay to make mistakes and retry.
- 7. Start writing bits and pieces depending on your current mood. Don’t plan what scene or chapter you’re going to write on a specific day because if you plan for a happy moment but you feel sad, it just won’t have the right tone and feel. Go with your current mood and don’t rush anything.
- 8. Research. If you’ve never personally experienced an event/place then look it up on the internet or books. The best resources are people so always try to contact others as they can give you own personal experiences.
- 9. Don’t worry about writing in order either. If you have a really good idea for a certain scene that would happen halfway through then write it. You can then go back and write the lead-up to it and always swap back and forth changing until you’re happy.
- 10. Take your time with everything. Write a bit a day, never rush or feel pressured. Go back and reread, correct errors, always swap between each individual character’s state of mind.
- 11. Do what YOU want. It’s your story and nobody else’s. You write exactly what you want to write and don’t imagine other people reading it. This means you’re free to create something you personally can be proud of and then it’s up to others as to whether they like it or not.
I think that’s all for now. There could be more or less tips but this is all I intend to write and I hope it helps anyone stuck. This is only the general order of things I live by when I write. I’m sure everyone has their own methods. I’m also happy to answer any questions or help anyone with any plots of their own or if they’re generally stuck, I recently set up a tumblr account for writing specifically, so ask questions or tips there: writingalliance.tumblr.com. Hope this post helped.
